It was much more enjoyable pre Premier league. What ruined it was the draconian Taylor report, yes stadiums needed desperately updating, but they could've kept terraces a part of that. Part of the experience for me died with the North and south banks, I haven't been a regular since those days.

Having first stared regularly going to West Ham in the early 70s and still going today, Football back in the pre prem days was a much better experience, you felt part of the club , yes it was a bit iffy for fans home and away but it was what you expected and was all part of the day out, modern premiership football is all about Sky tv and overpaid players , clubs don’t need fans turning up week in week out to pay the bills that’s all paid for by TV ,

Re: Was football back in the day more enjoyable than it is now?
Very difficult to compare . Today’s players wouldn’t have survived in the 70s/80s with the tackles flying in ! But then the 70s /80s players wouldn’t cope with the physical demands of modern day football .
Also look at the difference in pitch quality .
Personally I loved football before the premier league came in . Now I’m not that arsed .

Two things have killed the game in recent years...

MONEY
INFLUX OF FOREIGN PLAYERS

Re: Was football back in the day more enjoyable than it is now?
No comparison.

Modern football really is rubbish.

West Hams result used to make or break my weekend and week but these days I don't really care because we have no aspirations. In 85 we almost won the league, today, football is dead for those outside the top 5 in terms of money spent.

The world has changed and I'm just grateful I got to enjoy football when it was football, standing, working class game etc.

Re: Was football back in the day more enjoyable than it is now?
Another thing that was better was the first or best team played every game and the club was full on to win every game. The FA and league cups were serious, no one would consider not going full on to win them.

Re: Was football back in the day more enjoyable than it is now?
Yes football was much more enjoyable back in the day, on & off the pitch, absolutely no comparison.

I’m not wearing today’s players (at least British players) are more skillfull now either, better athletes no doubt, but has for being more skilful I think the only ones that’ll go with that are those that didn’t see the likes of Brooking, Devonshire, Dalglish, Hoddle to name a few.

If a player can run faster for longer does it make them more technicaly gifted then some of the great entertainers of the past, of course it doesn’t.

With today’s ridiculous amount of money we’re seeing some of the best foreign players coming over that we never saw in the past until sky arrived, but are they really making the game any better as a spectacle then it was in the past? Not for me.

With the exception of a few games, today it’s mainly about cancelling the opposition out, teams are afraid to lose due to the money in the league, you rarely see open games with sides going toe to toe, just packing the midfield & get everyone behind the ball.

Not entirely.

I am not sure the football was better or more enjoyable, actually I think it was worse, but I really did enjoy and miss, standing on a terrace with a pint in my hand watching the football in front of me, with a load of others doing the same.

Re: Was football back in the day more enjoyable than it is now?
I think it's all a bit sanitised now and the gap between the players and supporters is far too big.

Are they more skilful? Maybe the foreign ones but that was the case back at the start of the PL as well. British players now? There aren't many that would resemble a George Best, Brooking, Dev, Keegan, Dalglish, Rush, Shearer, the list is endless,. Try and name 10 Brits you would pay to watch these days?!

As much as I love watching West Ham as for the rest? My days of religiously watching MOTD and Live games has dropped. Maybe it's as I get older or maybe it's just not as good as it used to be. Man United against Arsenal Live used to be a good ruck, you would see a cracking battle but now it's just another game. Maybe there is just toom much football on TV now.

it was better back in the old days as i think more players played for the badge and club and not the money

I’ll probably get slaughtered for saying it but I think the premier league is hugely entertaining to. Its better than I’ve ever known it

Regardless of the fitness or skill of the players, I miss the whole atmosphere. I would travel to Kings Cross hiding my scarf in my jacket only to tie it around my wrist once we past Aldgate East when I felt safe. Pushing through the barrier without a ticket at UP station and immediately feeling that this was my turf. A quickie in the Queens, always on the lookout for rival fans coming out of the station. Trying to figure out where they were from by the clothes they wore. Walking down Green street and being hit with the unmistakable but far from pleasant smell from the Westlers hamburger cart. I had graduated to the South Bank once I hit 16 and feeling hard. Trying to stand behind someone who was much harder though. After the game the long wait at the station, scarf still on my wrist but off again at Aldgate in case Tottenham or Arsenal were getting on at Liverpool Street. The whole day a fantastic mix of adrenaline, chips and saveloys. I'm 64 now and miss everything about those days.

I used to go into the West side. I was too young to get involved but the corner with South bank used to get a tad lively

Re: Was football back in the day more enjoyable than it is now?
Technically they are more skillfull on average
Generally fitter on average
Pitches much better
Balls better

But those things plus the tackling and less 'atmosphere' have dimished the enjoyment to a fair degree.

Egg chasing is worse though - more skill, better fitness, professionalism and better pitches have absolutely diminshed Rugby as a spectacle

And "shepherding out of play" when it is clearly obstruction.

All attackers misunderstand the obstruction rule.

Except for Trevor Brooking, who is too intelligent to misunderstand anything, and taught me that if you're within playing distance of the ball, you're not obstructing.

I think he actually called legally getting between the ball and the attacker while the ball runs out of play "shepherding the ball out of play", but it was a long time ago that he took a class of 11 year-olds including me.

Football was MUCH BETTER in days of yore..

Now we get shit like "entitled to go down" when a player has barely been touched

And "shepherding out of play" when it is clearly obstruction.

Cuntathon. Man up, play the game!

Re: Was football back in the day more enjoyable than it is now?
Quality is better but as a day out it was more enjoyable in the past. A lot of that is based on my age, responsibilities and those who I would go with. Find going is hit and miss now. Players are too divorced from being part of the club. Just a bunch of outsourced players from all over with little connection to clubs for the most part. Probably get thrown out these days for any banter with players or opposition fans.

On the same theme - what's happening with the Safe Standing campaign? It seems to have had a very quiet few months - it's not a Brexit casualty, is it?
